About the name
Named for the valley we work in.
Passaic comes from the Algonquian language of the people who lived along this river, and is usually translated as peaceful valley. The county took the river’s name in 1837.
Clifton, where the company is based, was incorporated as a city on April 26, 1917, out of the older Acquackanonk Township. Its name comes from the cliffs of Garret Mountain, which close the western edge of the valley.
It seemed a better name than something invented. The work is ordinary — buy well, describe honestly, ship on time — and the name should be too.
